FLAC is lossless audio that holds every detail of your source without throwing anything away. Converting an MP4 to FLAC saves the soundtrack at full quality in roughly half the size of WAV, free and right in your browser with no signup. One honest note: most MP4s store compressed AAC audio, so FLAC preserves it perfectly but cannot rebuild detail that was already gone.

Will it lose quality?

  • The FLAC can only be as good as the audio already inside your MP4.
  • A bitrate higher than the source does not add quality, it only makes a bigger file.
  • 192 to 320 kbps keeps music clear. 128 kbps is fine for speech.

Converting to FLAC re-encodes the audio. To keep it exactly as it sits inside the video, convert to M4A instead, or to WAV for an uncompressed copy.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The FLAC has no sound
Some videos store audio as AC-3. The converter still handles it, but if a clip plays silent, re-download the source and convert again.
The file is too large to email
Convert at a lower bitrate, 128 kbps for talking, or trim the clip first to cut its length.
Which apps open FLAC files?
Almost anything opens it: your browser, your phone, any music app, or VLC. No special player needed.

FAQ

MP4 to FLAC questions

Is the MP4 to FLAC converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts MP4 to FLAC with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your video, convert it, and download the FLAC from your browser.
How do I convert MP4 to FLAC?
Upload your MP4, choose FLAC as the output, and start the conversion. When it finishes, download the FLAC file or open it in the editor to trim it first.
Does FLAC improve the audio from my MP4?
No. FLAC is lossless, so it keeps the source exactly as it is without further loss, but it cannot restore detail an MP4's compressed audio already discarded. The FLAC is as good as the soundtrack inside the video, no better.
Why convert MP4 to FLAC instead of MP3?
Choose FLAC when you want an archival, lossless copy of the soundtrack with no generation loss for editing or storage. Choose MP3 when you want a small file for everyday listening. FLAC files are larger because they keep everything.
How big is a FLAC file?
FLAC is lossless but compressed, so it lands around half the size of an uncompressed WAV. The exact size depends on the music: sparse audio compresses smaller, dense and busy audio stays larger.
What plays the FLAC files made from MP4?
FLAC plays in VLC, foobar2000, modern Android, and most desktop music apps. Older iPhones did not support it by default, so on those devices use M4A or MP3 instead.
Does the MP4 to FLAC converter work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?
Yes. Because the work happens through a browser tab, you can pull a FLAC out of an MP4 on a Mac, a Windows PC, a Chromebook, a Linux box, or an Android phone with nothing to install. Just note that a FLAC made on an iPhone may need a third-party player such as VLC, since older iOS builds skip FLAC by default.
Can I convert long videos or several files?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, so you can convert your videos one after another. Longer recordings make larger FLAC files and take a little longer to process.
Is it safe to convert MP4 to FLAC here?
Yes. Archiving an MP4 soundtrack as lossless FLAC takes no account and no installed software. If you want the detail on how the video you upload and the resulting FLAC are stored and removed, our security page covers it.
