FLAC is a lossless format, so it stores audio with no further compression loss. Converting MP3 to FLAC will not rebuild detail your MP3 already discarded, but it does lock in the quality you have so later edits and re-encodes do not chip away at it. The trade is size: a FLAC is usually several times larger than the MP3 it came from.

Will it lose quality?

  • Converting a lossy file to a lossless one cannot restore detail that was already discarded. It only makes a larger file.
  • Going from a high-quality source to FLAC keeps the sound clear while changing the format.
  • Each pass between two lossy formats loses a little, so always convert from the best source you have.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The FLAC is larger than I expected
Lossless and uncompressed formats are big by design. If you want a smaller file, pick a lossy format and a bitrate around 192 to 256 kbps.
The song details are missing
Title, artist, and album travel as tags when the source has them. If they are blank, add them in any music app after converting.
My app will not open the FLAC
Most apps open common audio, but a few are picky. VLC plays almost anything, or convert to MP3 for the widest support.

FAQ

MP3 to FLAC questions

Is the MP3 to FLAC converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts MP3 to FLAC with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your MP3, convert it, and download the FLAC from your browser.
How do I convert MP3 to FLAC?
Upload your MP3, choose FLAC as the output format, and start. Download the FLAC when it finishes, or open it in the editor to trim it first.
Does converting MP3 to FLAC improve quality?
No. FLAC is lossless, but it can only preserve what is in the file, not recreate what MP3 encoding threw away. The FLAC will sound the same as your MP3, just stored without any extra loss.
Then why convert MP3 to FLAC at all?
It is useful for keeping a master copy. Once your audio sits in FLAC, every later trim, edit, or format change starts from a lossless source, so the quality you have now does not erode through repeated re-encoding.
Why is the FLAC file so much larger?
A FLAC from an MP3 is typically three to five times the size, which is normal for lossless storage. The MP3 was compressed by discarding audio, while FLAC keeps every sample it is given, so the file grows even though the sound does not change.
Once I convert MP3 to FLAC, what plays the FLAC file?
VLC, most modern music players, Android, and many hi-fi devices play FLAC. Older iPhones did not support it by default, though recent versions and the Files app do. If a player refuses it, MP3 or M4A give wider reach.
Does the MP3 to FLAC converter work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert MP3 to FLAC on iPhone, iPad, Android, macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux with nothing to install.
Are the song tags kept?
Title, artist, and album carry over as tags when your MP3 has them. If a field arrives blank, add it in any music app after converting.
Can I convert several MP3 files to FLAC?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, so you can convert your MP3s to FLAC one after another. Because FLAC files are large, each one takes a little longer to download.
