M4A is the AAC audio Apple uses for Music tracks and iPhone Voice Memos, and plenty of apps and players still expect a plain MP3 instead. EchoWave changes M4A to MP3 right in your browser, free and with no signup, so a recording from your iPhone or Mac drops straight into car stereos, old MP3 players, and any editing tool. Both are compact lossy formats, so the file stays small and ready to share.

The formats

M4A vs MP3

M4A

MPEG-4 Audio

Apple-friendly AAC audio

Type
Lossy audio, usually AAC
Holds
AAC audio in an MP4 container
Typical size
Small, smaller than MP3 at the same quality
Plays on
iPhone, Mac, iTunes, and most players

Best for:Apple devices and clean compressed audio

MP3

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

The most universal audio format ever made

Type
Lossy audio format
Holds
Audio only
Typical size
Small, about 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps
Plays on
Effectively everything

Best for:Music, podcasts, and audio you listen to

Will it lose quality?

  • Converting a lossy file to a lossless one cannot restore detail that was already discarded. It only makes a larger file.
  • Going from a high-quality source to MP3 keeps the sound clear while changing the format.
  • Each pass between two lossy formats loses a little, so always convert from the best source you have.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The MP3 is larger than I expected
Lossless and uncompressed formats are big by design. If you want a smaller file, pick a lossy format and a bitrate around 192 to 256 kbps.
The song details are missing
Title, artist, and album travel as tags when the source has them. If they are blank, add them in any music app after converting.
My app will not open the MP3
Most apps open common audio, but a few are picky. VLC plays almost anything, or convert to MP3 for the widest support.

FAQ

M4A to MP3 questions

Is the M4A to MP3 converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts M4A to MP3 with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your M4A, convert it, and download the MP3 from your browser.
How do I convert M4A to MP3 on iPhone?
Save the M4A from Voice Memos or Files, then open EchoWave in Safari, upload the file, pick MP3, and download. There is no app to install, and renaming a file from .m4a to .mp3 in the Files app does not actually convert it, it only changes the label and can stop the file playing.
Can I convert M4A to MP3 on Mac and Windows?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser on macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux with nothing to download. On a Mac you can also use the Music app's Create MP3 Version, but that only works for files already in your library, while EchoWave handles any M4A you drop in.
Why does my iPhone save audio as M4A instead of MP3?
Apple records Voice Memos and stores Music downloads as M4A because AAC inside an M4A gives clear sound at a small size. Many non-Apple apps, car systems, and older players prefer MP3, which is why converting M4A to MP3 makes the file easier to use elsewhere.
Will converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?
Both M4A and MP3 are lossy, so this is a re-encode rather than an exact copy. The MP3 can only be as good as the audio in your M4A, and a higher bitrate cannot add detail. Export at 192 to 320 kbps for music and 128 kbps for speech or voice memos.
What MP3 bitrate should I pick when converting M4A?
Use 320 kbps for music you want to keep, 192 to 256 kbps for everyday listening, and 128 kbps for interviews, lectures, and voice memos. A bitrate above the source quality only grows the file without sounding better.
Does the MP3 keep the song title and artist tags?
Title, artist, and album travel along as ID3 tags when your M4A includes them, and you can add or edit those details afterward in any music app if they are missing.
Can I convert several M4A files or large recordings?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, so you can convert recordings one after another. Long voice memos and big files are supported and simply take a little longer to upload.
What opens the MP3 once I convert it from M4A?
Almost everything. MP3 plays in every browser, on every phone, in any music app, in your car, and in VLC. It is the most widely supported audio format, which is the main reason to convert from M4A.
Is it safe to convert M4A to MP3 here?
There is no account to create and nothing to install. See our security page for how EchoWave handles your files, or open the result in the editor if you want to trim it first.
