Updated June 2026

SWF is the old Shockwave Flash format, and Adobe ended Flash Player support back in December 2020, so this is a niche conversion for legacy projects, archived courseware, and Flash-based players that still expect a SWF. EchoWave turns your AVI into a SWF in your browser, free, with no signup. If your real goal is a video that plays today, convert AVI to MP4 or WebM instead, since both work in every modern browser.

AVI

Audio Video Interleave

A legacy Microsoft video container

Type
Legacy video container
Holds
Older codecs like DivX or Xvid with MP3 or PCM audio
Typical size
Large for the quality it gives
Plays on
Windows and VLC, patchy on phones

Best for:Playing older Windows video files

SWF

Shockwave Flash

Adobe Flash animation, now retired

Type
Flash animation
Holds
Vector animation and ActionScript
Typical size
Small for vector artwork
Plays on
Nothing by default, Flash was retired in 2020

Best for:Old Flash animations and games

Will it lose quality?

  • When the codecs already match SWF, the converter can change the container without re-encoding, so the picture stays identical.
  • When the video has to be re-encoded for SWF, a high bitrate keeps it visually close to the AVI.
  • Converting cannot add detail the AVI never had. The output is at best as good as the source.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The SWF will not play
Some players are picky about codecs. Try it in VLC, which opens almost anything, or convert again and let the converter re-encode the video.
The file got larger
A format change can shift the size, and re-encoding at a high bitrate adds overhead. Lower the bitrate or trim the clip for a smaller file.
Audio and video drift out of sync
Re-download the source and convert again. If a long recording drifts, splitting it into shorter pieces usually fixes the sync.

FAQ

AVI to SWF questions

Why would I convert AVI to SWF in 2026?
SWF is a legacy Flash format, so most people only need it for an old Flash project, an e-learning package that still loads SWF assets, or a slideshow tool that expects one. For anything that has to play on the modern web, convert AVI to MP4 or WebM instead.
Does SWF still play, now that Flash is gone?
Browsers dropped Flash Player at the end of 2020, so a SWF will not play on its own in Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox. To open one today you need a standalone player or the open-source Ruffle emulator. If you want a file that just plays, MP4 or WebM is the better target.
Will the AVI keep its quality as a SWF?
Converting re-encodes the picture, so the SWF can only be as good as the source AVI, never sharper. SWF was built for lightweight vector animation rather than full-motion video, so for high-quality playback a modern video container like MP4 is a stronger choice.
Is the AVI to SWF converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts AVI to SWF with no signup, no account to create, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your AVI, convert it, and download the SWF from your browser.
How do I convert AVI to SWF?
Upload your AVI, choose SWF as the output format, and start the conversion. When it finishes, download the SWF, or open the clip in the editor first to trim it or add captions.
Does it work on Mac and Windows?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert AVI to SWF on macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
What opens a SWF file once I have it?
A standalone Flash projector or the Ruffle emulator can open a SWF, and so can older authoring tools that still target Flash. If you only need to watch the clip, convert AVI to MP4 and play it in any browser or media player.
Can I convert large AVI files?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, and large AVI files are supported. Bigger files simply take a little longer to upload and convert before the SWF is ready to download.
