Updated June 2026

SWF is the old Adobe Flash format, and it is the kind of file you usually need for a legacy player, an archived course, or an interactive system that was built around Flash. This converter takes a QuickTime MOV, the format your iPhone and Mac record, and packages it as an SWF you can drop into one of those older workflows. It runs in your browser with no signup, and the conversion is free. If you are simply trying to make a clip play on a modern device, MP4 or WebM is the better target, because Flash itself was retired at the end of 2020.

SWF

Shockwave Flash

Adobe Flash animation, now retired

Type
Flash animation
Holds
Vector animation and ActionScript
Typical size
Small for vector artwork
Plays on
Nothing by default, Flash was retired in 2020

Best for:Old Flash animations and games

Will it lose quality?

  • When the codecs already match SWF, the converter can change the container without re-encoding, so the picture stays identical.
  • When the video has to be re-encoded for SWF, a high bitrate keeps it visually close to the MOV.
  • Converting cannot add detail the MOV never had. The output is at best as good as the source.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The SWF will not play
Some players are picky about codecs. Try it in VLC, which opens almost anything, or convert again and let the converter re-encode the video.
The file got larger
A format change can shift the size, and re-encoding at a high bitrate adds overhead. Lower the bitrate or trim the clip for a smaller file.
Audio and video drift out of sync
Re-download the source and convert again. If a long recording drifts, splitting it into shorter pieces usually fixes the sync.

FAQ

MOV to SWF questions

Is the MOV to SWF converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts MOV to SWF with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your MOV, convert it, and download the SWF straight from your browser.
Why would I still convert MOV to SWF?
SWF is a legacy format, so people convert to it for specific reasons: feeding an old Flash-based player, rebuilding an archived presentation or e-learning module, or matching a system that was built around Flash and has not been migrated yet. For everyday playback or sharing, an MP4 is a far more practical choice.
What can open an SWF file made from a MOV in 2026?
Adobe ended Flash Player support in December 2020, so nothing plays SWF out of the box on a modern computer. The common ways to view one now are Ruffle, an open-source Flash emulator, or VLC. Some archived players and standalone SWF viewers still work too.
Should I use MP4 or WebM instead of SWF?
For almost any modern use, yes. Try MOV to MP4 for the widest playback, or MOV to WebM for the web. Only pick SWF when a legacy Flash system specifically requires it, since current browsers and phones cannot play SWF without an emulator.
Does the SWF keep the sound from my MOV?
SWF can carry an audio stream, so the sound from your MOV is included in the converted file. How it plays back still depends on the SWF viewer or emulator you open it in, since playback support varies between tools.
Does the MOV to SWF converter work on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert MOV to SWF on macOS, Windows, Chromebook, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android with nothing to install. Note that the resulting SWF still needs an emulator like Ruffle to actually play.
Will the SWF look as sharp as the MOV?
SWF was designed for the modest resolutions of the old web, so a large HD MOV does not map onto it cleanly and can produce an oversized or softer file. Keeping the source frame size smaller gives a tidier SWF, and converting cannot add detail the MOV never had.
Can I trim or edit the video before converting?
Yes. Open your MOV in the editor first to trim it, crop it, or cut it down before you export to SWF. That is the easiest way to keep an SWF small, since the format suits short, simple clips.
Is it safe to convert MOV to SWF here?
There is no account to create and nothing to install, so you can convert without handing over personal details. See our security page for how EchoWave handles your files.
