Updated June 2026

A SWF will not open on a Mac unless the retired Flash Player is installed, and it never ran on iPhone or iPad. Converting SWF to MOV records the Flash animation as a QuickTime video that plays in QuickTime Player and drops straight into iMovie or Final Cut Pro for editing. EchoWave does it free in your browser, with no signup and no watermark.

The formats

SWF vs MOV

SWF

Shockwave Flash

Adobe Flash animation, now retired

Type
Flash animation
Holds
Vector animation and ActionScript
Typical size
Small for vector artwork
Plays on
Nothing by default, Flash was retired in 2020

Best for:Old Flash animations and games

MOV

QuickTime File Format

Apple QuickTime video, common on iPhone and Mac

Type
Video container (QuickTime)
Holds
H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio
Typical size
Large, often bigger than MP4
Plays on
iPhone, Mac, QuickTime, most modern players

Best for:Recording and editing on Apple devices

Will it lose quality?

  • When the codecs already match MOV, the converter can change the container without re-encoding, so the picture stays identical.
  • When the video has to be re-encoded for MOV, a high bitrate keeps it visually close to the SWF.
  • Converting cannot add detail the SWF never had. The output is at best as good as the source.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The MOV will not play
Some players are picky about codecs. Try it in VLC, which opens almost anything, or convert again and let the converter re-encode the video.
The file got larger
A format change can shift the size, and re-encoding at a high bitrate adds overhead. Lower the bitrate or trim the clip for a smaller file.
Audio and video drift out of sync
Re-download the source and convert again. If a long recording drifts, splitting it into shorter pieces usually fixes the sync.

FAQ

SWF to MOV questions

How do I convert SWF to MOV?
Upload your SWF file, choose MOV as the output, and start. EchoWave plays the Flash timeline and records it as a QuickTime video, then you download the MOV or open it in the editor for further changes.
Is the SWF to MOV converter free?
Yes. No signup, no account to create, no trial, and no watermark on the output. Upload your SWF, convert it, and download the MOV from your browser.
Will the MOV open in QuickTime, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro?
Yes. MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, so the converted file plays in QuickTime Player and imports cleanly into iMovie and Final Cut Pro, which is the main reason Mac users convert old SWF content.
Why can I no longer play my SWF files on Mac?
Adobe retired Flash in December 2020 and macOS no longer ships a working player. SWF was never supported on iPhone or iPad. Converting to MOV turns the animation into a video your Apple apps can open today.
Will the interactive parts of the SWF survive?
No. MOV is a linear video, so ActionScript, buttons, and clickable menus become a flat recording of what plays on screen. A standalone animation converts well, but a Flash game only captures the run it happens to record.
Will converting SWF to MOV lose quality?
SWF is usually vector artwork, so EchoWave renders it to a raster MOV at a set size. Choose a higher video bitrate for sharp edges and smooth motion. The MOV can look very close to the source, but it cannot add detail that was not there.
Does the SWF to MOV converter work on Mac and Windows?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux, and you can also use it from iPhone, iPad, and Android. There is nothing to download.
For my SWF, should I convert to MOV or MP4?
Pick MOV when you are editing on a Mac with iMovie or Final Cut, since it is the native QuickTime format. Choose MP4 instead when you mainly want to share or upload the clip, because MP4 plays on a wider range of devices and sites.
Does the MOV keep the audio from the SWF?
If your SWF contains a sound stream, it is carried into the MOV. Many Flash files have no audio, so the MOV may play silent, and you can add a soundtrack in the editor afterward.
Is it safe to convert my files here?
There is no account to create and nothing to install. See our security page for how EchoWave handles the files you upload.
