Updated July 2026

Flash Player was switched off at the end of 2020, so the SWF animations and games you saved no longer open in any browser. Converting SWF to MP4 records the animation as a standard video that plays on phones, laptops, TVs, and social apps, with no Flash plugin and nothing to install. EchoWave does it free in your browser, with no signup and no watermark.

SWF vs MP4

SWF

Shockwave Flash

Adobe Flash animation, now retired

Type
Flash animation
Holds
Vector animation and ActionScript
Typical size
Small for vector artwork
Plays on
Nothing by default, Flash was retired in 2020

Best for:Old Flash animations and games

MP4

MPEG-4 Part 14

The video format that plays everywhere

Type
Video container
Holds
H.264 video plus AAC audio, sometimes subtitles
Typical size
Large, it carries video
Plays on
Phones, browsers, TVs, almost any player

Best for:Watching and sharing video

Will it lose quality?

  • When the codecs already match MP4, the converter can change the container without re-encoding, so the picture stays identical.
  • When the video has to be re-encoded for MP4, a high bitrate keeps it visually close to the SWF.
  • Converting cannot add detail the SWF never had. The output is at best as good as the source.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The MP4 will not play
Some players are picky about codecs. Try it in VLC, which opens almost anything, or convert again and let the converter re-encode the video.
The file got larger
A format change can shift the size, and re-encoding at a high bitrate adds overhead. Lower the bitrate or trim the clip for a smaller file.
Audio and video drift out of sync
Re-download the source and convert again. If a long recording drifts, splitting it into shorter pieces usually fixes the sync.

FAQ

SWF to MP4 questions

How do I convert SWF to MP4?
Upload your SWF file, choose MP4 as the output, and start the conversion. EchoWave plays the Flash timeline and records it as video, then you download the MP4 or open it in the editor to trim or resize it.
Is the SWF to MP4 converter free?
Yes. There is no signup, no account to create, no trial, and no watermark on the output. Upload your SWF, convert it, and download the MP4 straight from your browser.
Why can I no longer open my SWF files, and will MP4 fix that?
Adobe ended support for Flash in December 2020 and modern browsers removed the player for security reasons. SWF was never supported on iPhone or iPad either. Converting to MP4 turns the file into a video that today's devices can actually play.
Will the interactive parts of my SWF still work in the MP4?
No. MP4 is a linear video, so buttons, clickable menus, and anything driven by ActionScript become a plain recording of what plays on screen. A self-contained animation converts cleanly, while a game or interactive lesson only captures the path it happens to follow.
Will converting SWF to MP4 reduce quality?
SWF artwork is usually vector based, so EchoWave renders it to a clean raster MP4 at a fixed size. Pick a higher video bitrate for crisp lines and smooth motion. The MP4 can look very close to the original, but it can never add detail the source did not contain.
Does the SWF to MP4 converter work on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android?
Yes. The converter runs in any modern browser, so you can convert SWF to MP4 on macOS, Windows, Chromebook, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android without installing anything.
Does the MP4 keep the sound from my SWF?
If your SWF has an audio stream, it is carried into the MP4 alongside the video. Some Flash files store no sound at all, in which case the MP4 plays silent, and you can add music or narration in the editor.
Why choose MP4 over another video format?
MP4 with H.264 is the most widely supported video format there is. It uploads to YouTube, Instagram, and almost every site, and it plays on phones, browsers, and TVs without extra codecs, which makes it the safest target for old Flash content.
Can I edit the MP4 after converting from SWF?
Yes. Open the converted MP4 in the editor to trim the start and end, crop the frame, change the speed, or add captions and a soundtrack before you share it.
Is it safe to convert my SWF here?
There is no account to create and nothing to install on your machine. See our security page for how EchoWave handles the files you convert.
