MOV is what your iPhone and Mac record, and the files tend to be large. WebM is the format built for the web: it uses the VP8 or VP9 codec to hold good quality in a much smaller file, and it plays natively in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and on Android. Converting a MOV to WebM is the usual move when you want fast-loading video on a page or a clip that does not bloat your site. It runs in your browser here, free, with no signup and no watermark.

Best for:Video embedded on web pages

Will it lose quality?

  • When the codecs already match WebM, the converter can change the container without re-encoding, so the picture stays identical.
  • When the video has to be re-encoded for WebM, a high bitrate keeps it visually close to the MOV.
  • Converting cannot add detail the MOV never had. The output is at best as good as the source.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The WebM will not play
Some players are picky about codecs. Try it in VLC, which opens almost anything, or convert again and let the converter re-encode the video.
The file got larger
A format change can shift the size, and re-encoding at a high bitrate adds overhead. Lower the bitrate or trim the clip for a smaller file.
Audio and video drift out of sync
Re-download the source and convert again. If a long recording drifts, splitting it into shorter pieces usually fixes the sync.

FAQ

MOV to WebM questions

Is the MOV to WebM converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts MOV to WebM with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your MOV, convert it, and download the WebM from your browser.
Why convert MOV to WebM?
WebM was designed for the web, so it loads faster and takes up less space than a MOV at a similar quality. It is the natural choice for video you embed on a page, a background clip, or anything where a smaller, browser-friendly file matters. For broad device playback outside the browser, MOV to MP4 is the safer pick.
Will the WebM be smaller than the MOV?
Usually yes, often by a wide margin, because VP9 compresses more efficiently than the H.264 or HEVC video typically inside a MOV. The estimator above shows the size you can expect at a given bitrate and length, so you can balance quality against file size.
Does converting MOV to WebM lose quality?
WebM uses a different video codec than MOV, so the picture is re-encoded rather than copied across. At a sensible bitrate the result looks very close to the source, and converting can never add detail the MOV did not have. Pick a higher bitrate when sharpness matters more than size.
Which browsers and devices play WebM?
WebM plays natively in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and on Android, and recent versions of Safari on macOS and iOS support it too. The main gaps are older devices and some default desktop players; VLC opens WebM everywhere if a player refuses it.
Should I choose VP8 or VP9 for the WebM?
VP9 gives better quality for the same file size and is the modern default, which is what you want for most web video. VP8 is older and slightly more compatible with very old players, but for almost any current use VP9 is the stronger choice.
Does the MOV to WebM converter work on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert MOV to WebM on macOS, Windows, Chromebook, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android with nothing to install.
Can I convert large or several MOV files?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, so you can convert your videos one after another. Large MOV files are supported and simply take a little longer to upload and convert.
Can I trim or resize the video first?
Yes. Open your MOV in the editor to trim, crop, or resize it before exporting to WebM. Cutting unused footage and lowering the dimensions is the quickest way to shrink the final file.
