Updated June 2026

FLV was the format of the Flash web, and browsers stopped playing it when Flash was retired in 2020. WebM is its natural successor: an open format that uses the VP8 or VP9 codec and plays natively in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Android. EchoWave converts FLV to WebM in your browser, free and with no signup, so an old clip becomes a small file you can embed straight into a web page.

The formats

FLV vs WebM

FLV

Flash Video

Legacy Flash video from the pre-HTML5 web

Type
Flash video container
Holds
H.263, VP6, or H.264 video with MP3 or AAC audio
Typical size
Small, made for streaming
Plays on
VLC, since browsers dropped Flash in 2020

Best for:Recovering old Flash web video

WebM

WebM

Open video built for the web

Type
Open web video container
Holds
VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio
Typical size
Small at good quality
Plays on
Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Android

Best for:Video embedded on web pages

Will it lose quality?

  • When the codecs already match WebM, the converter can change the container without re-encoding, so the picture stays identical.
  • When the video has to be re-encoded for WebM, a high bitrate keeps it visually close to the FLV.
  • Converting cannot add detail the FLV never had. The output is at best as good as the source.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The WebM will not play
Some players are picky about codecs. Try it in VLC, which opens almost anything, or convert again and let the converter re-encode the video.
The file got larger
A format change can shift the size, and re-encoding at a high bitrate adds overhead. Lower the bitrate or trim the clip for a smaller file.
Audio and video drift out of sync
Re-download the source and convert again. If a long recording drifts, splitting it into shorter pieces usually fixes the sync.

FAQ

FLV to WebM questions

Is the FLV to WebM converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts FLV to WebM with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your FLV, convert it, and download the WebM from your browser.
How do I convert FLV to WebM?
Upload your FLV, choose WebM as the output format, and start the conversion. When it finishes, download the WebM, or open the clip in the editor first to trim, crop, or resize it.
Why convert FLV to WebM instead of MP4?
Both are good modern targets. WebM is open and royalty-free and is excellent for embedding directly in a web page, often at a smaller size. Pick MP4 instead when you need the widest device support, since a few older apps and Microsoft browsers lack built-in WebM playback.
Will converting FLV to WebM reduce the quality?
WebM re-encodes the video with the VP9 codec, and a high bitrate keeps the result visually close to the FLV. Converting cannot add detail the source never had, so the WebM is at best as sharp as the original clip.
Is the WebM smaller than the FLV?
Usually yes. VP9 compresses more efficiently than the older codecs found inside most FLV files, so you tend to get a similar-looking clip in a smaller file, which is helpful for fast-loading web video.
What plays a WebM file?
WebM plays natively in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and on Android, and it opens in VLC on any system. On older devices or in some Microsoft apps without the codec, VLC is the reliable fallback.
Does the FLV to WebM converter work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert FLV to WebM on iPhone, iPad, Android, macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux with nothing to install and no account to create.
Why will my old FLV not open in a browser anymore?
FLV depended on Adobe Flash Player, which every major browser removed in 2020. Converting to WebM gives you a file modern browsers play on their own, with no plugin and no Flash.
