FLAC keeps every detail of a recording, but the files are large and many phones and streaming apps would rather have AAC. Converting FLAC to AAC shrinks each track to a fraction of its size while keeping the sound clear, especially at 256 to 320 kbps. It runs in your browser, with no signup and no watermark.

About half the size of WAV
Plays on
VLC and most players, not older iPhones by default

Best for:Archiving music at full quality

AAC

Advanced Audio Coding

The lossy codec that succeeded MP3

Type
Lossy audio format
Holds
AAC audio only
Typical size
Small, efficient at low bitrates
Plays on
Phones, browsers, YouTube, and streaming services

Best for:Streaming and mobile audio

Will it lose quality?

  • Converting a lossy file to a lossless one cannot restore detail that was already discarded. It only makes a larger file.
  • Going from a high-quality source to AAC keeps the sound clear while changing the format.
  • Each pass between two lossy formats loses a little, so always convert from the best source you have.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The AAC is larger than I expected
Lossless and uncompressed formats are big by design. If you want a smaller file, pick a lossy format and a bitrate around 192 to 256 kbps.
The song details are missing
Title, artist, and album travel as tags when the source has them. If they are blank, add them in any music app after converting.
My app will not open the AAC
Most apps open common audio, but a few are picky. VLC plays almost anything, or convert to MP3 for the widest support.

FAQ

FLAC to AAC questions

Is the FLAC to AAC converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts FLAC to AAC with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your FLAC, convert it, and download the AAC straight from your browser.
Will converting FLAC to AAC lose quality?
AAC is a lossy format, so it discards some data to make smaller files, while FLAC keeps everything. At 256 to 320 kbps the difference is hard to hear, but it is a one-way trip, so keep your FLAC originals if you want a perfect copy.
What AAC bitrate should I pick?
Use 256 to 320 kbps if you want the result to stay close to the FLAC source, 192 kbps for everyday listening on a phone, and 128 kbps when small size matters more than detail. A higher bitrate cannot rebuild what AAC removes, so start from the best FLAC you have.
Why convert FLAC to AAC instead of keeping FLAC?
AAC files are far smaller, so they fit more music on a phone and stream faster. AAC also plays natively on iPhone, iPad, Android, and most browsers, while FLAC is not supported by default on some Apple devices.
Does the AAC keep the song title, artist, and album art?
Title, artist, and album travel across as tags when your FLAC includes them. Embedded cover art usually carries over too, and you can add or fix any of these details in a music app or tag editor afterward.
What is the difference between AAC and ALAC?
AAC is lossy and small, while ALAC is Apple's lossless format that stays large like FLAC. This converter produces AAC for size and compatibility. If you want a lossless copy for Apple devices, convert FLAC to M4A instead.
What opens an AAC file?
Almost everything. AAC plays on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows, and every modern browser, plus apps like Apple Music, YouTube Music, and VLC. You rarely need a special player.
Does the FLAC to AAC converter work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert FLAC to AAC on iPhone, iPad, Android, macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux with nothing to install.
Can I convert several FLAC files?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, so you can convert your FLAC tracks one after another. Larger files simply take a little longer to upload and convert.
