MP2 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, the older sibling of MP3 that broadcast still leans on. DVB television, DAB radio, and some legacy MPEG tools expect MP2 because its simpler coding is easy to decode and resilient over the air. Converting MP3 to MP2 gives those workflows the format they want, though both are lossy, so this re-encodes rather than improves the audio.

An estimate. Real size varies a little with the encoder and the audio itself.

The formats

MP3 vs MP2

MP3

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

The most universal audio format ever made

Type
Lossy audio format
Holds
Audio only
Typical size
Small, about 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps
Plays on
Effectively everything

Best for:Music, podcasts, and audio you listen to

MP2

MPEG-1 Audio Layer II

An older MPEG audio layer used in broadcast

Type
Lossy audio format
Holds
MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, audio only
Typical size
Larger than MP3 at the same bitrate
Plays on
VLC, broadcast gear, and most players

Best for:Broadcast and legacy audio workflows

Will it lose quality?

  • Converting a lossy file to a lossless one cannot restore detail that was already discarded. It only makes a larger file.
  • Going from a high-quality source to MP2 keeps the sound clear while changing the format.
  • Each pass between two lossy formats loses a little, so always convert from the best source you have.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off

The MP2 is larger than I expected
Lossless and uncompressed formats are big by design. If you want a smaller file, pick a lossy format and a bitrate around 192 to 256 kbps.
The song details are missing
Title, artist, and album travel as tags when the source has them. If they are blank, add them in any music app after converting.
My app will not open the MP2
Most apps open common audio, but a few are picky. VLC plays almost anything, or convert to MP3 for the widest support.

FAQ

MP3 to MP2 questions

Is the MP3 to MP2 converter free?
Yes. EchoWave converts MP3 to MP2 with no signup, no file-count limit, no trial, and no watermark. Upload your MP3, convert it, and download the MP2 from your browser.
How do I convert MP3 to MP2?
Upload your MP3, choose MP2 as the output format, set a bitrate if you want, and start. Download the MP2 when it finishes, or open it in the editor to trim it first.
Why would I need an MP2 file?
MP2 is still the expected audio in broadcast: DVB digital television, DAB radio, and some MPEG-2 video tools were built around it. If a station, encoder, or older system rejects your MP3, an MP2 is usually what it wants.
Will converting MP3 to MP2 lose quality?
Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding your already-compressed MP3 into MP2 discards a little more. Convert from the best MP3 you have, and keep the bitrate reasonably high to keep the loss small.
Is MP2 better than MP3?
Not in efficiency. MP2 uses simpler coding, so it needs a higher bitrate than MP3 for similar quality, which makes the files larger. Its strengths are error resilience and low decoding effort, which is exactly why broadcast prefers it.
Is an MP2 file bigger than the MP3?
Usually yes, at matched quality. Because MP2 compresses less aggressively, it needs more bitrate to sound as clean as MP3, so the resulting file tends to be larger for the same audio.
Once I convert MP3 to MP2, what plays the MP2 file?
VLC, broadcast equipment, and most media players handle MP2. Some lightweight phone apps skip it, so if you just need everyday playback, keeping the MP3 or converting to MP3 is the wider-reach option.
Does the MP3 to MP2 converter work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?
Yes. The converter runs in any browser, so you can convert MP3 to MP2 on iPhone, iPad, Android, macOS, Windows, Chromebook, and Linux with nothing to install.
Can I convert several MP3 files to MP2?
Yes. There are no file-count limits on these pages, so you can convert your MP3s to MP2 one after another. Larger files simply take a little longer.
